    • Photo of user

      Linda Coyle

One of the best resources we have found comes from the Council for Corporate and School Partnerships, which states, “To define a good partnership model one critical element to keep in mind is that school-business relationships can have a powerful impact on the community. Community members and parents should play a role in the development process, since the entire community ultimately benefits from a successful partnership. Recognizing that schools are typically a focal point of every community, community leaders should be engaged and supportive of partnerships that improve the education experience. By focusing decisions about partnership activities at the local level, we can ensure the maximum involvement and success.”

Thanks, everyone! Just a bit more information: The partnership programs at CREST encompass a wide variety of activities. A large number of businesses (SRP, Honeywell, Boeing, TGEN, BioDesign, Robertson Fuels) have stepped forward to forge strong partnerships that have provided our teachers with staff development, curriculum design, policy development, instructional development, and for our students; guidance, shadowing, mentoring and internship experiences. A strong group of leaders have assembled for all decisions since CREST's inception in the form of Advisory Councils, which are part of all PVUSD’s Career and Technical Education programs. Our business partners may also provide incentives and awards to our students, however we focus more on the development of “relationships” between the employees, teachers and students, and only look for potential financial resources after a strong relationship has been established and our partnership goals have been met. Though the types of partnership activities can vary widely, the common goal of our school-business partnerships is to improve the education experience.

How do teachers work with partners? What are their concerns with working with partners?

    January 10th, 2012 14:45

    • Photo of user

      Laurie McFarlin

Our teachers at the Dayton Regional STEM School often work directly, and very well, with a variety of partners. While I am the overall "partnership" person for our School, I encourage our teachers to get involved right away when the partner is interacting with their class or initiative. Sometimes they will ask me for help when they need a certain skill set or type of partner for their class. I cannot point to any real concerns that our teachers have working with partners - sometimes it is challenging to communicate since our teachers are tied up in class for most of the day.

How do you draw partners in at the very beginning? A letter? An email? Do you visit in person? How do you persuade them from the get go not to push it aside?

    January 10th, 2012 14:44

    • Photo of user

      Laurie McFarlin

While every potential partner is different, I have found the most effective way to begin the process of exploring partnership is to have the interested individuals come visit the School while classes are in session. We will give them a tour - often led by a student - and usually by the end of the tour there are some indicators of "areas of interest" or "ways they may be able to get involved." There does of course need to be diligent follow-up and nurturing of these collaborations.
